Septic tanks can provide an ideal habitat for breeding mosquitoes because of the high organic content in the water and the warmth provided in the tank. Mosquitoes can enter septic tanks through vent pipes, or through cracked or improperly sealed risers and lids. A 2mm gap is all that is needed for a septic tank to become infested. Covering a septic lid with plastic or a tarp and burying it with several inches of dirt is one of the best ways to mosquito-proof a septic tank, just make sure the lid is properly secured first!

One faulty septic tank can breed thousands of mosquitoes creating an issue for an entire neighborhood. The mosquito associated with breeding in septic tanks, Culex pipiens, the ‘house mosquito’, is known to transmit mosquito-borne viruses including West Nile Virus.

How to prevent mosquitoes from reproducing in your septic tank:

  • Cover exposed septic tank lids with a tarp/ plastic and several inches of dirt, sand, or mulch.
  • Check for cracks in septic tank lids. Seal or replace cracked lid to ensure a tight fit.
  • Be certain that lids are fastened and properly secured.  Missing screws on lids may cause a gap in the fit which could allow mosquitoes access to the septic tank.
  • Screen vent pipes with a mosquito-proof screen (fine mesh that is 1/16th of an inch)
  • If you notice mosquito infestations on your property and suspect septic is the source, create a Service Request and a technician can schedule a free inspection.

Keep Mosquitoes Out of Your Septic Tank

Septic risers are becoming more common and convenient for maintenance since they do not have to be dug up each time for service, but also present an entry point for mosquitoes if they are not properly sealed and secured. Fill in all gaps, cracks, and holes large enough for a mosquito to gain entry.
